A Russian woman wants government authorities to pay her brother’s medical bills after he was badly beaten at the Calgary Remand Centre.
Denis Telyakov, 24, has severe head injuries and may never fully recover. His sister, Elena Romanova, came to Calgary as soon as she heard about her brother’s injuries in August.
“He lost his consciousness and they continued to beat him with a foot, with the legs. They jump[ed] on his head.”
Telyakov is in the neurology unit at the Foothills hospital. His sister is getting legal advice about how she can get the government to pay for his care.
“It’s the fault of this province. He is a victim of crime,“ she said.

We, the citizens of Russian Federation, working and residing in the GTA, here express our total disbelief towards blatant vote manipulation in the Parliamentary Elections held on December 4th, 2011 across the Russian Federation. Thereby we are organizing a peaceful protest on Saturday, December 10th at 2:00 PM in front of the Russian Consulate (175 Bloor Street East, Toronto). This action is to show support for a sister protest in Moscow, which over 20,000 people are planning to attend and is part of a series of protests taking place in New York, San Francisco, Washington, Boston, Kansas City, Montreal, Bergen, Dublin, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Kharkiv, Kiev, London, Lyon, Oslo, Paris, Prague, Rome, Seoul, Stockholm, Bern, Tokyo, Vancouver, Berlin, Munchen and many others on the same day.
Our opinion is based upon the continuously mounting evidence presented by citizens directly involved in the election procedures. Over the past few days, the social sphere has been flooded with photographs and documents taken at polling stations, directly contradicting official results. These brave and honest men and women have exposed multiple cases of falsification and ballot tampering of unprecedented proportions, in the face of attempted bribery, threats and physical assault. All of the available evidence suggests that the Russian people have given no more than one third of seats to parties opposing pro-Putin’s “United Russia” while official results insist that no less than half of voters are supporting the ruling party.
The most disturbing fact is that Russian officials including the President of Russian Federation, Mr. Medvedev and the Chairman of the Central Election Committee, Mr. Churov have publicly refused to investigate this gigantic electoral fraud and claimed that elections were fair and transparent. Demonstrations and public protests which followed the day after the elections and took place in Moscow and St. Petersburg were brutally dispersed. Hundreds of protesters were unlawfully arrested and jailed.
Canada has many cultural, political and economic ties in Russia. The two countries share the privilege of being the biggest in the world. Russia has an unparalleled amount of natural resources. It has the world’s biggest supply of gas, oil, diamonds, raw wood. The turmoil which is shaking Russia at the moment will indadvertedly affect its partners.
We demand the following steps to be taken by Russian officials and invite everyone to join our protest on Saturday, December 10th:
1) To annul the results of the openly rigged Parliamentary election and to reschedule new elections for the 4th of March, 2012.
2) All protestors arrested since December 4th, 2011, which include many journalists, public figures and ordinary citizens, to be released immediately.
3) Public investigation of all electoral fraud cases to be conducted. All officials and government employees found guilty as the result of such investigation should be brought to justice with no exceptions.
We support all Russian citizens willing to live in a free and transparent society as we believe democracy is the only way our county could survive and become prosperous.
We strongly beleive that Canadian public would be very much interested in learning truth about corruption and real state of affairs in Russia.
Please join us in a peaceful protest against rigged elections in the Russian Federation on Saturday, Dec 10th at 2:00 PM in front of the Consulate of the Russian Federation at 175 Bloor Street East, Toronto,Ontario, M4W 3R8.
